Specialist Teachers1 Response | Last response: 15th June 2011, 10:32 am by Hilary Pegum
The DfE has revealed that as part of the curriculum review, they will be investigating and reporting on primary staffing and structure. This report it is thought will be influenced by Alexander's Cambridge Review, which recommended specialist teaching in years 5 and 6. What do you think? Do we need specialist teachers at primary level, or is it more important to retain generalists? What impact might this have on training needs?
Compulsory History?1 Response | Last response: 23rd January 2012, 2:53 pm by Steve Sidders
With the government review underway, one question that is being raised is whether certain subjects such as history should be part of the core and at which key stages they should form part of compulsory education. We would like to know what you think. Should history be core in the primary phase? If so, when should formal teaching of history start? Age 5? Maybe age 7? What shape should any primary history curriculum take?
Weblinks1 Response | Last response: 11th November 2010, 3:15 pm by Debbie Ashcroft
Has anyone else tried to find the resources via the weblinks in issue 56 and been able to find them? I refer especially to paqge 27 references (http://images.icenetwork.co.uk etc.....
Local HistoryI wonder if anyone can help point me in the right direction please. As History subject leader, I have been asked to launch a Local History project based around our school. We are in a Victorian building and last year, we found some log books from the early 1900's which is fantastic as a starting point. I would like to get parents, families and the local community involved in telling their stories about the school and would love to find archived photograps of how the local area around our school has changed over the last 110/120 years. I just don't know where to start as it could be a huge task and could perhaps culminate in a book....?! If anyone has done anything similar and can offer any advice, I would really appreciate it. With many thanks, Debbie
After school History Club2 Responses | Last response: 10th August 2010, 1:22 pm by Melanie Jones
I would love to start up an after school history club for KS2 and wonder if anyone has done this in their school. I would be grateful for ideas and suggested resources. Thanks
Problems in teaching primary history? After training for 4 years I am about to write my dissertation based on children's concepts and difficulties in history. I have thought about the obvious 'understanding of chronology' route but would prefer another focus. I am thinking about discussing ways of developing children's inference skills, or looking at teir understanding of cange and continuity. Just wondering if any of you professional teachers have any ideas of common difficulties that children display?? I would be grateful for replies, thanks.
What do we mean by "excellence" in History in Primary Schools?1 Response | Last response: 15th July 2009, 6:47 pm by Clare Jones
I am trying to grapple with what good history looks like, at all levels of our education system... Unfortunately, I am not a primary practictioner, so have no real understanding of what 5-11 year olds are - or should be - expected to do, learn and understand. What do others think? Are there certain things that children leaving Primary school should be able to do, in relation to their study of the past? What should they know? What about their thinking and dispositions? What would an outstanding teacher have enabled them to do?

Curriculum Design2 Responses | Last response: 10th June 2008, 7:27 pm by Rick Weights
In light of the forthcoming Rose Review, should the Primary curriculum still contain individual subjects, or should there be wider use of linked subjects and themes?
