Former President of the HA posthumously honoured.

Published: 27th September 2013

Barry Coward was a well regarded academic in his field of seventeenth century British history and President of the HA from 2005 - 2008. For more than forty years he taught at Birkbeck College, University of London, so it is fitting that Birkbeck are the recipients of £1000 from the Barry Coward Appeal. The college will be using the money to launch a new annual essay award for undergraduates.

Professor Jackie Eales, current President of the Historical Association, said: "It is wonderful to be in a position to honour Barry's memory in this way. He was a passionate advocate for the mature students at Birkbeck. Barry was also great supporter of A Level students and we will be using another £1000 from the fund to help support the Great Debate in 2015. The Debate began when Barry was President and has gone from strength to strength."

The HA would like to raise £10,000 for the appeal and to offer further funds both to Birkbeck students and in supporting the UK wide Great Debate competition for sixth form students.
Donations to the fund are always welcome, please send cheques payable to the Historical Association to: The Barry Coward Fund, The Historical Association, 59a Kennington Park Road London SE11 4JH or call 020 7735 3901
