Another good year for our GCSE Historians
The Historical Association congratulates all those that have a pass in GCSE History. History is the best taught subject at Secondary level according to Ofsted and this is borne out by the results today. History continues to appeal to students at GCSE level - as an interesting and illuminating subject and one that helps to develop useful skills for future work and study.
The strong results reflect the time and dedication demonstrated by history teachers around the country. The enthusiasm and expertise of teachers are key factors in developing young peoples own interest encouraging them to value historical study.
Many of those receiving their results today will go on to study History at ‘A' Level and further. For the rest they have the basics that they need to remain enthusiasts for history and skills that will be used in any number of studies, professions and situations.
"History GCSE is good because it allows you to learn about past events that have shaped our present - it's still relevant to us now. It's also interesting and helps you to develop skills like forming an argument which can be used in other subjects such as English. It also helps to widen your general knowledge." Lila Cherrih, successful student of GCSE History, North London.
The Historical Association is committed to continuing the strong performance of history in schools at all levels. Working with teachers, the Historical Association is lobbying to stop any attempts to squeeze curriculum time for History teaching and is working to tackle any dips in student numbers taking GCSE history in the future.
The HA has a teacher memberships of over 4,500 teachers in both primary and secondary education and a further 1,500 individuals in higher education and the wider history community. The Historical Association works closely with Government, the QCA and Ofsted to ensure that history teachers are listened to and represented. It campaigns on their behalf for improved CPD, curriculum time and resource provision.
In September this year the HA will be releasing an important report on the state of History teaching across England - contact the HA to receive the report and its findings in advance.
