Points of View: Capturing the 19th Century in Photographs

Tuesday 3rd of November, 5pm - 8pm at the British Library, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB

Nick Barratt, presenter of 'Who Do You Think You Are?' and 'Hidden House Histories' will give the keynote lecture at this event that the HA in conjunciton with the British Library are organising, free to all HA members.

Using the British Library photography collections, Points of View examines the development of photography from its birth in rural England through to its proliferation as both a widely accessible means of recording history and a truly creative art form.

Our keynote speaker Nick Barratt has a wide interest in personal and family histories and will present 'Personal archives in the digital age' which will cover elements of scrapbooking, personal memorabilia, digital records and social networking - as well as challenges to the personal heritage sector at all levels.

CPD certificates will be available.

In addition, there will be a chance to view the exhibition, and four workshops to choose from:

1. Newspapers and Teaching the 19th century - Alf Wilkinson - National Subject Leader for history: The British Library has an unrivalled collection of newspapers - many of which have been digitised and are now available for use in schools. Come and get some ideas on how they can be used to enliven your teaching of the 19th century. Bring a memory stick and take away the materials after the workshop.

2. Using photographs to bring the Victorian world to life -
Robert Guyver - Senior Lecturer, Primary ITT, University College of St Mark and St John, Plymouth:
This seminar looks at Victorian photography in its wider social and artistic context and explores the potential of photographs as sources for primary school history and for creative and cross-curricular enquiry in the classroom. This links with the new Victorian e-cpd material on the Historical Association website.

3. Guided Tour of Points of View Exhibition - Marcus Bohr - photographer and photographic researcher: Marcus Bohr will be leading an exciting tour of the British Library's major exhibition, Points of View: Capturing the 19th Century in Photographs. Tours will explore the exhibition, tracing the history of photography from its invention in 1839 through to its growth as a popular leisure pursuit.

4. Points of View Workshop -
‘Time Frame' -
Jo-Anne Sunderland Bowe and Shelagh McCarthy - British Library workshop leaders: An excellent opportunity to find out more about the British Library's Points of View workshops for Secondary and FE groups. You'll be able to try out workshop activities and discover what your students would do if they came for a visit. In addition, you'll be able to develop teaching ideas to take back into the classroom.
