History: Enhanced or submerged in a cross-curricular sea?

Run by teachers for teachers Saturday 17th October 2009 Attwood Building, Perry Barr Campus, Birmingham City University Fee £ 10 (Student rate £5)

How does history relate to the needs of the child? How does history relate to the whole curriculum? At whatever key stage these questions are of central importance. This is especially true in light of changes to the secondary and the proposed developments in the primary curricula, following the Rose Review. We are delighted to have HMI Mike Maddison as our keynote speaker.  He will be giving us an insight into how can we ensure that history plays a central role in promoting an exciting curriculum. Our workshops provide a range of approaches that will enhance the experiences of children in our schools. We are particularly pleased to welcome at our conference Dean Smart, who is representing the History Teacher Education Network.

Programme

9.30 am Registration and publisher exhibition.

10. 00- 11.00 Key Note Address History in schools: the view from HMI Mike Maddison. This will be followed by an opportunity for delegates to share their experiences of History in a cross-curricular context between 11.00-11.15 am.

11.15-11.45 Coffee and publisher exhibition.

11.45- 1.15 pm. Workshops - Please select two of the following:

Option A  - Playing and Creating Interactive Games for History Attainment (KS2 /KS3) : Ilona Aronovsky, History Education Consultancy.

Option  B-  Organising a suspended timetable day for History: Darius Jackson, School of Education University of Birmingham, Carol Jackson KS2 Co-ordinator Oakhill First School Redditch and Julia Hyland School of Medicine, University of Birmingham.

Option C -The Past Speaks: Using Sound and Music in History Teaching (Primary and Secondary) -Dean Smart , PGCE History tutor at the University of the West of England in Bristol, and previously a teacher in inner-city Bristol.

Option D- Re-creating the Past- using living history interpreters in the classroom (KS1/KS2/KS3) Andy George, Head teacher, Wendover Cof E Combined School, Simon Lockwood , Senior School Improvement Advisor, Buckinghamshire  County Council and Andy Smith, Senior Lecturer in Education University of Northampton.

Option E- Constructing an historical enquiry through the use of Accelerated Learning (KS3):  John Ward, History and Accelerated Learning Coordinator, Heathfield Foundation Technology College, Sandwell

Option F- Making Cross-Curricular Links in History-why bother? ( KS3/4): Alf Wilkinson, National Subject Lead, New Secondary Curriculum. Historical Association.

Option G - Developments at Key Stage 4: GCSE History Pilot and the Humanities Diploma: Ian Ollerenshaw, Examiner for the Pilot and teacher at Saltely School Birmingham and Roger Emmett, Senior Adviser for History, Children and Lifelong Learning Directorate, Staffordshire.
