Congratulations to History GCSE Students
We at the Historical Association would like to congratulate history students across the country who have received their GCSE results today. History GCSE passes have remained high and shown a slight improvement. The A*-C pass rate is up from 70.2% to 70.4% and the overall pass rate remains static thanks to the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of both students and their teachers alike; proving as Ofsted and Historical Association evidence notes that history is one of the most well enjoyed and well taught subjects on the curriculum. As the subject association committed to supporting both history teachers and their students we would like to thank students for the hours of hard work that they have put in and their teachers for providing some of the best teaching across the curriculum.
History is a subject that not only requires students to recall and handle evidence effectively and make judgments, but also to argue successfully orally and on paper and most importantly to think. We at the Historical Association are sure that those students who have passed their history GCSE today will be well equipped for the next phase in their lives, whether that be continued study or work; history equips students with the skills needed for life.
Melanie Jones, Education Manager, The Historical Association.
This year, history has seen a slight decline in the number of entries for history GCSE, although this is not a marked decline and we are yet to feel the real impact of the requirements of the English Baccaluareate, which will not be seen in terms of history GCSE entries before 2012 at the earliest, and more likely to be fully felt by 2013.
The Historical Association is committed to continuing the strong performance of history in schools at all levels. And will continue to work closely with Government and Ofsted to ensure that history teachers are listened to and represented. It campaigns on their behalf for improved CPD, curriculum time and resource provision at all educational levels.
In September this year the HA will be releasing an important report on the state of history teaching across England - contact the HA to receive the report and its findings in advance.
