Webinar: Henry VIII as a Medieval King

Event Type: CPD

Takes Place: 2nd April 2019

Time: 4-5pm

Venue: Online

Description: We often think of Henry VIII’s reign as a time of innovation. Novelty, perhaps even modernity, marked the church and the navy, the government of Wales and Ireland, parliament and administrative change. Yet we should remind ourselves how closely Henry’s kingship resembled that of his medieval predecessors. His ambitions were for conquest, control and divine blessing. The institutional means at his disposal, from the common law and parliamentary taxation to the royal household and an army of lordly retinues, were forged by the Plantagenets. The personal skills necessary for kingly success were the same as they had been for his ancestors and so, lastly, were the constraints on his power.
