"What is History? Studying the Past at University and Beyond”

Dr Andrew Johnstone (University of Leicester)

This lecture encourages students to think broadly about History as an academic discipline. It examines the difference between facts and interpretation, looks at the question of objectivity, and considers how the study of history has evolved over time.  Crucially, it highlights that History is an argument about the past. While it is relatively easy to write a narrative of past events, historians must make a case for the broader significance and importance of those events. Understanding those arguments enables us to see what historians are trying to say about their subject and the world at large.
