Celebrate Bengali New Year! 14th April

Just a quick reminder. Celebrate Bengali New Year with a day of FREE activities that all the family can enjoy at Museum of London Docklands. Listen to tales from Bangladesh, create your own Alpona painting, watch a traditional Bengali song and dance performance and meet Abdul Miah, an Asian sailor, to hear stories of his adventures.

To help celebrate the largest Asian festival in Europe and largest Bengali festival outside of Bangladesh and India - Museum of London Docklands has fantastic free events on offer at the Museum on Tuesday 14 April. The individual events are listed below but if you would like further information or images please do jsut get in touch.

Bengali New Year

Words of the Golden Lotus
12-12.30pm & 4-4.30pm
Join Shanti, the lost daughter of an old merchant, on her perilous journey of trials and adventures to discover herself, save her family and inherit her new heritage. A tale inspired by traditional Bengali Folktales, Words of the Golden Lotus is the story told in poetic verses in English with elements of Bengali song, rhyme and rhythm.

Alpona Painting
12.30-1.15pm, 1.30-2.15pm & 3-3.45pm

Alpona is a traditional floor decoration which is made by sprinkling rice flour to form intricate patterns. Create your own beautifully designed Alpona painting.

Abdul Miah
1-1.30pm & 3-3.30pm

Meet Abdul Miah, an Asian sailor on board the Fort William East Indiaman. Listen to his tales of bravery, travel and adventures.

Bangladeshi Variety Show

Enjoy a show of Bangladeshi arts and culture including New Year traditional songs and music performed by the Kobi Nazrul children's group.

Bangla folk dance workshop
Learn a Bangla folk dance and tell a story through your moves about rain and the natural beauty of Bangladesh.

Children's storytelling and songs
Enjoy some traditional stories and songs performed by the Kobi Nazrul Centre's students for International Mother's Language Day.
