The Broken Road

B.R. Collins

Young Quills reviews

1. The plot was not very interesting and I only finished it because I wanted to get it over and done with.

I do like though how the author made God into a character which kept me guessing (at first I thought it was an owl, then God, then Death before I finally settled on God).

I don't like Vick though as he was quite thoughtless and cold to Rufus when he wanted to look for Lena.

The description was very good as I could imagine every moment.

Conclusion: 6/10

2. I loved this book!

It was difficult to get into at the beginning because the opening was from a strange perspective (but I got it in the end).  Rufus, the main character, is a jeweller's son who, after hearing Nick a preacher speak, becomes part of a children's crusade.  Nick is God's ‘chosen one', he persuades children to follow him to Jerusalem.  What starts with such promise becomes a sad and terrible journey.  The ending though, is lovely, it's a glimpse into the future which rounds things off, I like that sort of ending.  This is a great historical novel but a brilliant love story too.

3. I did really enjoy I really liked the character Rufus the apprentice at the workshop, at the start I thought that it could have been a little bit more interesting because it was mostly poem and rhyming but more towards the end I understood the book more and learnt to enjoy it. The history in this book was realistic and I thought that it was also really authentic. I would definitely recommend this book to other readers.
