Duty Calls

By James Holland

Young Quills reviews

1. Duty Calls is a thrilling book by James Holland and it takes you through the hardships and triumphs of an average soldier in the Second World War. However this book talks about Britain fighting in the air instead of on the ground.

The plot is centred around Archie and his friends at the squadron and how they fight together. Ted is Archie's best who plays a big role with his family such as when Archie goes on a date with Ted's sister, Tess.

This book was a fast paced, action-packed book- I couldn't stop reading it. Every page revealed a new adventure which added more tension and excitement. The gripping storyline flows from the very start to the very last word. I particularly enjoyed the battles, which were amazing! All the shooting and bombs being dropped were described so well I could hear the droning of the planes as they flew through the sky. The story wouldn't be the same without them.

The description was emphatic. This ensured that the characters and scenes were easy to picture such as when Ted gets hit and his plane becomes a ball of fire. The plot built up to make the action dramatic and sometimes even emotional.

However, at the start it is a little tedious. They go in a spitfire, see an enemy plane but lose it in the clouds. This is repeated several times before one gets to the exciting parts where, finally, then it becomes enjoyable!

Although at the start it is tedious, I still found this book enjoyable. As there is another book in the series, I will look forward to reading it!

2. I really enjoyed this book because it was very fast moving and entertaining. I would recommend this book to 11 and over, because it has violence and death in it.

3. Duty Calls: Battle of Britain is a fabulous novel about a twenty year old pilot named Archie Jackson and his squadron with one mission: defending Britain.

Another amazingly descriptive war book from James Holland, but in this book they take to the skies during the Battle of Britain. The question is: will Archie survive the difficult journey to France and stop the Nazi invasion?

I think this book is mesmerising in every way because there is always danger everywhere that the squadron are taken, even in a training flight! I would recommend this book to a friend and would give it 8/10 - lack of humour loses 2 points.

4. I would recommend it to some one who is into history about the world war 2. I chose this book because I liked the title and the cover.  The book is about a 19 year old boy is new in the RAF and he was trying to fly away from the Germans in his Spitfire. It was very realistic because I could imagine it in my head.
