The guidance in this section is intended to help anyone who is thinking about becoming a history teacher and wants to find out more about the options open to them, as well those who have already embarked on a particular training programme. It includes practical guidance about the process of choosing between different Routes into Teaching, explaining the differences between traditional PGCE programmes, the two School Direct routes and Teach First, and giving you an insight into different trainees’ experiences. You can also find the Survive and Thrive resources, a series of specially written guides for trainee teachers, introducing some of the key principles related to planning, teaching and assessing history. The ‘New, Novice and Nervous’ section includes a set of short guides to the HA’s professional journal Teaching History. Each guide focuses on an issue that new history teachers (or non-history specialists) might be struggling with and directs you to articles by practising teachers showing how they have tackled the same problem.
