A Skull in Shadows

By Robert Swindells

1. I really enjoyed this book because it makes you want to read more and more.  The chapters end with a cliffhanger so it makes you eager to know what happens next.  I really liked the beginning and the ending of the book because the author made it very interesting by writing short but very effective sentences.  There is also some humour in the story and in some parts of the story.  The author makes it a bit scary.  I would really like this book to win the award.

2. This was freaky and scary and I didn't want to read it in the dark!  Set in World War Two, Josh and his friends are in search of something exciting to do, they start to explore deserted house and find a human tooth. When a scary face appears at the window things really start to get spooky.

Despite the creepiness of the story I really did enjoy the book and it took me into the era of the second World War and the lives of both the British and their enemies.

3. This book is set after the wartime and it is set in Coney Clay. The main characters are Jinty and her brother Josh and his friends Victor, Peter, Donnie and Ken. One day when Josh and Jinty go out to play, they find a cottage and they go in as they are not aware that it is abandoned so they go in and find a tooth and think that there is someone in that house. They run away and keep it as a secret but Josh decides to tell his friends about the tooth. Josh and his friends find the cottage but there is no tooth. They see a skeleton instead of the tooth and they run away. They thought it was only them that knew about that house but the vicar and the police knew about it as well. They have to keep it as a secret as not the whole town knows about someone living in an abandoned house in Shadows Lane.

I enjoyed this book, as it was very exciting about what was going to happen next. I think that how the last sentence and one of the first sentences was the same was really effective, as it wanted to point out that nothing happens in Coney Clay. This book wasn't really realistic because their wouldn't be a abandoned house with someone in their after the war time as usually after the war the police would try and find anyone alive and it would be strange if they didn't look in one particular house. I would like to read more books by this author, as there are other similar books as well. This book made me think of the many people that died during the war and it also made me remember about people who are lucky and live even though they were at war so this book made me remember about those people.

I enjoyed the book however I think they could have made it more realistic by setting it in a graveyard because the cottage is in the center of the town where there are houses around the cottage with people living in their so it is quite weird to have an abandoned cottage in the center.

I would recommend this book to people around my age so 13 onwards and any gender if you don't mind spooky things. If you do like spooky things then probably any gender from 9 year old onwards. Also people who like reading stories about wartime and after the wartime would enjoy this book.

4. This book is mainly for children who are aged 11 and under because it is not really based on any history facts. I actually don't like the book as I don't feel the book is for me.
