Rose Between Two Thorns

By Anne Perry

Young Quills reviews

1. Rose Between Two Thorns is an excellent book and definitely worthy of first place in the young quills award. The reason I like this book so much is because I learnt so much about the time period when King Charles the First was killed and how the country was divided, however, when reading other books I felt bombarded with facts and information. The whole idea of Rosie waking up one day and is in the year 1649 makes the information more realistic and easier to understand. This is my new favourite Historical Fiction book and I shall certainly be reading the other books in the Timepiece series.

2. Roses between two thorns is by Anne Perry and I would recommend it to 10+. I like this book because I like history and I like it how they have combined history to a normal story.   The book is a historical book and is set in the past and present. There was a girl called Rosie and she is in class learning about the civil war. The first part of the story tells you about Charles I is found guilty and so he gets his head chopped off. Civil war breaks out and she finds herself in 1649 family and neighbours are fighting against each other. Rosie tries to protect herself while keeping Marie and David together. Can she manage?

3. Overall I thought the book was great. Even though it is not a long book it did have a lot of History. What I really liked about the book is that Rosie, the main character, can go from 1649 to 2012 and come back. Even though most of the book is based on a family I got a sense of what the time was like in 1649. When you first finished the book you don't realise it but once you think about it you will realise that you have learnt a lot.

4. I thought the title worked really well with the story as it is about a girl with two lives. The two lives are one about Rose who has Dyslexia, and can't read and the other is about the same girl but this time she is a working girl in the period of Charles I. I found that this is a great book and as it said on the cover it was Dyslexia-friendly. His simple  tale was fun and one of the short books which I have read in ages!! I felt that this book gave me a feeling on how I felt reading books like this in the past.

Thank you for giving me a book that let me visit my past and learn a bit about Charles I.

5. Did you enjoy the book? :

I really like the book, I liked how at the beginning it showed what it really is like in high school and how she felt and I liked how realistic it actually felt in the era. Sometimes it confused me but overall I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to one of my friends.

Is there a special character or event or place that you particularly liked or thought was good? : I liked how she promised to help her brother out and how well the author described everything so vividly and realistically it made you feel as she was actually there.

Did the book make you want to find out more about history? :

I don't usually like history so I definately thought this book was going to bore me! But it did the complete opposite it made me actually search for things that were said in the book.

Did the book make you want to read more books by this author? :

Yes I saw there is more in the collection and I'm defiantly going to get them.

Is there anything else you want to say about this book? :

Some of the language at times is a bit hard to understand but other than that I loved the book.
