Music, Place and Identity: The Morriston Orpheus Choir 1935-1985

Event Type: Branch

Takes Place: 17th August 2024

Time: 11am

Venue: National Waterfront Museum, Swansea

Description: The talk will initially contextualise the social and cultural landscape in which the Choir was formed and it will highlight the importance of ‘Music’ and ‘Place’ as vectors and signifiers of its evolving identity. The influences of industrial society, social conditions, organised religion, the Eisteddfod and popular culture are identified as working within those vectors and acting as evolutionary agents of ‘Identity’. The talk will also examine the diversity of the Choir’s membership, the organisational methodologies it adopted and the local and global communities associated with the Choir and how these relationships illustrate how the Choir sought to reflect and project a layered and multi-faceted identity.
