Historical anniversaries in 2023

Published: 4th January 2023

Welcome to 2023

Every year has significant anniversaries and 2023 is no exception. It is 70 years since the European Convention on Human Rights became effective; 80 years since the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising; 100 years since the Republic of Turkey was established; 150 years since the publication of Anna Karenina; 200 years since the Demerara Rebellion, a slave uprising consisting of 10,000 enslaved people; 250 years since the Boston Tea Party and 420 years since the death of Queen Elizabeth I. Of course, there are many more things to remember and reflect on all year round – and we have lots of resources to help you do that!

January 2023 has a number of anniversaries pertinent to our understanding of the current world around us. One in particular is on 22 January: 50 years since the Roe vs Wade case made abortion a constitutional right in the USA. If you want to know more about that and why therefore recent news to overturn this case is so important then listen to our Second Wave Feminism in the US podcast from the archive.
