Germany as a divided and defeated nation is explored through the lens of how the two new Germanys rebuilt their States politically and culturally. Professor Anna Saunders reflects on the different inequalities that existed between the two states and how stability was established between political leaders, even when political dissent existed within their own Germanys. She examines how reuinification was not a foregone conclusion until the reform movements of the 1980s had started. The division that existed between the two Germanys had a lasting impact on some people’s attitudes and ideas.
