Bowie knives, sugar and abolitionists

This article summarises the learning from a project that uses local history and geography to support the process of diversifying and decolonising the school curriculum. The project was inspired by a seminar within the University of Sheffield PGCE course, initially taught by Mark Cottingham and intended for history student teachers. As the seminar was expanded to bring history and geography student teachers together, so Christine Winter joined the project, which soon also included other local collaborators. The article provides a rich illustration of the value of such collaboration and includes an example of an enquiry developed by Katie Dennis, with advice for others (beyond South Yorkshire) seeking to develop their curricula in similar ways...
