The Duke of Wellington and the little man on the cob

On 24th March, 1843, the painter, Benjamin Robert Haydon, wrote down an odd story, told to him earlier that evening by his friend, the sculptor, John Carew. The anecdote was already at least three removes from its original source, the Duke of Wellington, and concerned events that had taken place many years before.
