Promote the past, celebrate the present: putting your history department in the news

Article

By Dan Collins, published 1st March 2003

Dan Collins urges history teachers to promote both their subject and their department in the local press. Drawing on his experience of a history department in a large, mixed, multi-cultural comprehensive school in West London, Dan argues that there are many opportunities available, from national anniversaries to the success of individual students. The benefits are many, not least to correct the image of history-teaching so prevalent in the press. Students, governors, parents and others in the local community will swell in pride at the history department’s achievement and become more constructively curious about its value in strengthening the whole curriculum. With GCSE take-up in Year 9 stronger than ever, and increasingly healthy take-up at AS, this kind of subject promotion is clearly working.
