Past Forward: GCSE History

Article

By Chris Culpin, published 30th September 2003

This summer was the thirtieth in which I have worked as an Examiner in History for 16- year- olds. This is a really sad confession, but I think it at least might allow me to offer an insider’s perspective. What follows is a consideration of the issues confronting GCSE history as it stands today. I must make it clear that this is a personal perspective, and does not represent the standpoint of Edexcel or of the Schools History Project. I shall argue that GCSE, as it now stands, is doomed and that euthanasia should be exercised before it implodes causing collateral damage to too many students.
