Recorded Webinar: Female slave-ownership in 18th- and 19th-century Britain

By Dr Hannah Young, published 30th March 2023

There is a great deal of discussion at the moment about how we engage with and confront the history and legacies of slavery in twenty-first century Britain. A lot of attention has been placed on men like slave trader Edward Colston or merchant and slave-owner Robert Milligan, both of whom were memorialised in prominent statues. But what about the women who were involved in the process? This webinar will investigate the British women who were key players in this violent, brutal and degrading system and who used their wealth, generated from the enslavement of other human beings, to help shape British society, and as a consequence, the world that we live in today.
