Professor Lisa Jardine CBE

The Historical Association is saddened by the news of the passing of Lisa Jardine, historian and recipient of the HA’s Medlicott Medal.

Lisa Jardine was one of Britain’s leading historians. Her commitment to history and public debate took her knowledge and intellect far beyond the usual confines of the academic. She spoke eight languages and championed science and scientific discussion as much as history and her other interest literature. She wrote numerous books and articles, taking history and her other interests to new audiences.

She was a supporter of women’s rights and a woman’s right to a career and intellectual pursuit. The Historical Association awarded her the Medlicott Medal in 2006 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to history and the fact that her very name brought recognition of greatness to the study of the subject. Lisa Jardine's 2006 Medlicott Lecture is attached below.

She will be sadly missed by all her knew her, but her work and writings will live on for generations to come.
