By Andrew Wrenn

Webinar series: Creating curriculum pathways through primary history at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

Session 3: Empire

An overview will be given of the development of empires over time taking in those that developed in ancient civilisations such as Egypt, colonisation by Greek city states and the empire building of Alexander the Great and then the Romans. The webinar will compare Viking colonisation and conquest with that of earlier empires and include comparisons with empires featured in curricular options such as the Islamic Abbasid Caliphate and Benin. Links will be made to the optional study of aspects of British Imperial history beyond 1066 such as commemoration of Commonwealth forces in the world wars and the Battle of Britain. Reference will be made to the possible study of significant individuals at Key Stage 1 such as Mary Seacole, a British-Jamaican nurse who travelled from the then British colony of Jamaica to help British troops fighting in the Crimean War in the middle of the 19th century.
