Description: Human Rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith OBE acted as adviser and judge on this occasion when Exeter College students from different specialist backgrounds (including Law, Politics and History) provided jury members and counsels for the prosecution and defence when General Sir Redvers Buller was put on trial. He was accused of three offences: military incompetence, brutality, and colonialism. Expert witnesses were called. An actor playing the part of Mahatma Gandi spoke for the prosecution as well as a colonialism expert. They were cross-examined by the cousnsels for the defence and prosecution. Robert Guyver spoke for the defence and was cross-examined. This also happened to the actor playing the part of General Buller. Two students who took part in this event, on opposite sides, are sharing their reflections on the trial.
