Efe’s review
Summary: This book is about a dressmaker’s fortune of making a dress for the Royal Court. The dressmaker, whose name is Rose, is trying to find a perfect opportunity to become a rich woman. The location of this thrilling, excellent adventure is in Paris. Did you know that this book is based on a real story involving Rose Berlin? Rose has red hair and a red and white dress on. Can Rose pursue her dreams? Read Rose’s Dress of Dreams to find out!

Opinion: My favourite character was Rose because she is confident! My least favourite part was when they all doubted her because that is really mean!

Recommendation: I recommend this book for 5 and older because you may not understand it. I recommend this book for kids who want to be a dressmaker because you could learn from Rose’s experience!

Thank you for reading this review.

Isabella’s review
I really enjoyed this book because it involved a big adventure for a small girl. I found the princess most interesting, as she pretended to be a maid and was quite shy.

I learnt from the book that dresses in the past were 5 – 6 metres wide. This book was interesting to read because it was set in Victorian times. Rose’s Dress of Dreams was interesting to me as it described Victorian dresses and what was considered strange in Victorian days.

I would definitely recommend this book to pupils aged from 7 – 11.

Lucy-Jo’s review
I really enjoyed the book because it was exciting and there was always something new happening. I liked Princess de Conti because she did lie but she was a kind, honest, and nice person. I did not like mama and papa because the always laughed at Rose’s sketches and ideas. I would mostly recommend it to girls because it was very princess and girly but boys can read it too.

Rosie C’s review
I really enjoyed reading this book in bed because when Rose sees the people of her town, she imagines them wearing beautiful clothes that she wishes she could design.

I loved Princess de Conti when she pretended to be a maid so Rose wouldn’t feel so nervous. I didn’t really dislike anyone but when they laughed at Rose’s ideas it made me feel sorry for her.

I learned that in France there was a girl called Rose who designed dresses for the queen. I also learned that in France the poor people got mad at the rich people so all of the royal family got executed. The time it was set in was interesting because all of the people wore different types of clothing to what we wear today.

I thought that the plot was exciting because one minute you think Rose has got a job but then you realise she only cleans the shop up.

I would recommend this to my friends and my sister because it is really good and it is telling you not to give up on your dreams. What stood out most for me were the descriptions of the dresses at the start.

Nadia’s review

None.

Did you learn anything new about the past from the book?
A bit.

What made the history or the time it was set in interesting?
It was interesting when Rose was in Paris.

Would you recommend the book to other pupils?
Yes!

India’s review
This book is a bit too pink and this put me off reading it at first. I did read it though and I’m glad that I did. I got to find out about a lady who loved creating dress designs and I really like art. The dress designer’s name was Rose and she was a real person who lived in France. She created dresses for important people including Marie Antoinette of France. Everyone who wore her dresses was made to feel special when they wore them and she really thought about her ideas. This is a small book and a quick and easy read. If you like art and clothes you would like this book and if you aren’t a strong reader yet it would be a good way to read something interesting that is also easy to understand.

Ava’s review
I really enjoyed my book. It was very interesting and unique.

My favourite character was Rose because she was talented and different. My favourite part was when Rose talked to the princess like she had known her for a long time.

I would recommend this book for kids who are 5 – 8 years old and I would rate it four and a half stars. All in all, this was a very good book.

Ellen’s review
My favourite character in this book was Rose because she had great ideas and she made her dreams come true. I did not really like the fortune teller as fortune tellers are supposed to tell what is going to happen but this fortune teller got it wrong! I did learn about some history that I didn’t know before. I learned about how girls in France lived in the 1700s and about the Queen Marie Antoinette who was beheaded. I really enjoyed looking at how people dressed at the time. The plot was exciting because I did not expect that Rose’s dream would come true and that she would make a dress for the princess. I liked the way the princess kept herself secret to build Rose’s confidence. I would recommend it to other people to read. It was quite easy to read and the pictures were lovely too!

Violet’s review
My favourite character was Rose as she started so little and unimportant and then bam she was selling dresses to the Queen of France! My least favourite character at first was Mademoiselle Pagelle because she used Rose as a slave but she was nice in the end. I learned that before Rose came to Paris and transformed it into an amazing city, the clothes they wore were very boring. It seemed as if Paris was a really dull city and now it is one of the most amazing places. The plot was a mixture of excitement, sadness, interestingness, and rivetingness! I would definitely recommend it to other people to read.

Florence’s review
I loved Rose and her dress designs but I didn’t like Madame Pagelle as she was a bit mean to Rose. I don’t think I learned anything new about the past from the book, but I did like the way it was based on a true story and Rose was a real person. I found the book to be exciting and I would recommend it to others.

Isla’s review
I found Rose the most interesting character as she met the Princess de Conti. I did not really like Madame Pagelle as she was a bit mean to Rose. I liked learning about France and it was interesting to read about what Paris was like in the past. I thought the book as quite light-hearted and made something that was quite serious, quite fun. I would certainly recommend it others to read.

Unnamed reviewer’s review
The plot:
A brief summary is that the main character is called Rose and she dreams of being a famous dressmaker. Unfortunately, nobody likes Rose’s ideas; they laugh and make fun of her. She travels to Paris, which is the capital of France, to see if her dream could possibly come true but everybody still thinks her ideas are too abstract. Rose tries and tries and finally her dreams come true.

The characters:
I found Rose (the main character) the most interesting because she was incredibly brave, even though it didn’t seem like it. I noticed this because she never gave up on her dreams no matter what anybody said. I didn’t particularly like Rose’s family because they were never very supportive of Rose and laughed at her like everybody else whereas they should have helped her make her dreams come true.

Did you learn anything new about the past?
One thing I learned was that France once had a royal family like the UK has now.

What made the history of the time it was set in interesting to you? One of the reasons that made the time it was set in interesting was how people in that time weren’t open to new ideas; they considered them crazy.

Was the plot exciting, thought-provoking, serious, light-hearted?
I found that the plot was a combination of “thought-provoking” and “light-hearted”.

What stands out most?
What most stands out for me from the book was that this storybook was based on a true story and is a real bit of history basically summed up in one book.

Would you recommend it?
I would definitely recommend it to other pupils.

Willow’s review
The plot:
A girl called Rose dreamt of being a dressmaker and designed all the dressed she would make. One day she showed her parents but they laughed at all her sketches so she went to Paris to get a job as a dressmaker but they all said no. Then she went to one shop and got a job. After all her hard work she got to design dresses for the Princess and Queen.

The characters:
I found Rose the most interesting character as she wanted to fulfil her dreams and become a professional dressmaker. This told me she was very passionate. I didn’t really like Mademoiselle Pagelle as she didn’t really believe in Rose and wasn’t very nice until she got a cold and couldn’t deliver the dresses to the Princess.

Did you learn anything new about the past?
I learnt that when Rose was 16 she travelled to Paris to become a dressmaker. After, she began making dresses for the Princess de Conti and other court ladies. Rose is a girl who always dreams of dresses and wants to be a famous dressmaker when she grows up. The dress she dreams of most is a dress that shines like the moon and stars.

The characters:
My favourite character is the princess because she was very shy but when she wore the dress she felt confident. I did not like Rose’s mum, dad, or brother because they laughed at her designs that she created. Also, I did not like them because they let her go to Paris on her own.

Did you learn anything new about the past?
No, because it is a fiction book and it didn’t have any truth in it.

What made the history of the time it was set in interesting to you? I found the time of this book interesting because it must have been long ago, as they laughed at Rose’s amazing designs.

I learned that in the past people wore quite dull clothes that weren’t so fancy.
