HA webinar series for history teachers, leaders and SENDCos

What does this series cover?

As the SEND system moves towards earlier intervention, tiered support and greater mainstream accountability, expectations of subject leaders in delivering inclusive education are sharpening. This series explores how history departments can respond proactively: building strong partnerships with SEND specialists, what inclusive curriculum design looks like in practice, and fostering cultures where all pupils can access an ambitious curriculum. Case studies will show how history teachers and SENDCos can co-design support that strengthens – rather than dilutes – disciplinary rigour and raise the attainment of SEND students through targeted interventions.

  • How is the series structured and delivered?

    The series consists of three webinars each lasting approximately 1 hour. The webinar series was originally recorded in Summer 2026.

  • What does each session cover?

    Session 1: Subject leadership and SEND reform: what it means for history
    Presenter: Catherine Priggs

    This session explores how national SEND developments are reshaping expectations of subject leadership in mainstream schools. Participants will consider how history departments can lead inclusive practice from within.

    The session will examine:

    • • The direction of SEND reform and Ofsted’s focus on inclusion – and what these mean for history teaching
    • • Common misconceptions about provision for pupils with SEND
    • • Moving from reactive to proactive curriculum design
    • • Appropriate interventions for pupils with SEND
    • • A subject leader’s expectations of departmental staff in supporting pupils with SEND
    • • Strategies for bringing the department with you

     
    Participants will leave with an audit tool to evaluate their department’s current practice.

    Session 2: Working effectively with SENDCos and specialist colleagues
    Presenter: Gemma Hargraves

    Collaboration between subject teams and SEND departments has potential to transform the experience of pupils with SEN. This session focuses on building purposeful, sustainable partnerships.

    The session will explore:

    • • Understanding the SENDCo role and pressures in the current system
    • • Translating EHCP outcomes into meaningful goals in the history classroom - both in terms of progress and self-• regulation
    • • Using Individual Support Plans to effectively deliver targeted support for pupils in History
    • • Productive conversations about adaptation, challenge and expectations
    • • Working effectively with Teaching Assistants inside and outside the classroom
    • • Sustaining an inclusive classroom and positive behaviour when teaching controversial histories

     
    Participants will develop a framework for structured collaboration within their own school context.

    Session 3: Building a strategy for inclusive history
    Presenter: Dale Banham

    This final session moves from collaboration to implementation. Participants will explore a range of strategies that underpin a practical, long-term inclusion strategy for their department.

    The session will cover:

    • • Embedding routines that support memory, literacy and confidence across KS3-4
    • • Developing effective feedback strategies for SEND students that develop confidence and create a two-way dialogue about learning. 
    • • Planning targeted, history specific interventions (including case studies of successful interventions for high attaining neurodiverse students) 
    • • Creating a 12-month implementation and review plan
    • • Monitoring the impact of inclusive practice without generating excessive workload

     
    Participants will leave with a toolkit of strategies for SEND students that develop self-efficacy and improve outcomes. 

  • Who is the series for?

    The course is aimed at history subject leaders, seconds in department/TLR postholders and aspiring subject leaders. It is also relevant for SENDCos and Assistant Heads (Teaching & Learning). It will focus on teaching at Key Stages 3 and 4.

  • What are the learning outcomes?

    This webinar series will enable you to:

    • • Develop a subject-led approach to inclusion that aligns with current SEND reform direction in England.
    • • Articulate what high expectations look like for pupils with SEND within an ambitious history curriculum.
    • • Strengthen collaboration between history departments and SENDCos to foster a positive classroom culture and improve outcomes for pupils with additional needs.
    • • Design and implement a sustainable departmental strategy for inclusive history teaching.

  • Who is leading the series?

    Catherine Priggs, FHA is a freelance education consultant. She is a member of the Historical Association’s Secondary Committee and a specialist assessor for two exam boards.

    Gemma Hargraves is a history teacher and Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral). She is a member of the Historical Association’s Secondary Committee and has previously been an A-level examiner and team leader.

    Dale Banham, FHA is a history teacher and education consultant specialising in raising attainment at GCSE. He is an author of Key Stage 3 and GCSE textbooks.
