Children in the Paper Industry
Event Type: Local / Community
Takes Place: 17th April 2026
Time: 7:00pm
Venue: The Tudor Room, Apsley Mill Cottage, Stationers Place, Hemel Hempstead, HP3 9RL
Description: Children were a crucial part of the country’s working population in the 19th century, taking on jobs in mines, farms, domestic service, textiles, and, of course, the paper industry. Discover what life was like for children working in the paper mills, from the days of 24-hour shifts to growing legislative protection and education – whilst they still remained a key part of the workforce. The Apsley Paper Trail talks programme runs through the warmer months of the year (April to October). Held on Friday evenings at 7pm, talks are delivered by a variety of specialists, mostly local historians, so they are perfect for those wishing to further their local knowledge. There is a strong paper theme, with talks about the Gade Valley paper mills, John Dickinson, printing and development of the local area. They include human stories, as well as great inventions. Tonight's speaker is Rowena Haigh, Collections Officer of The Michael Stanyon Archive. Talks are informal and the ticket price includes a mug of tea or coffee and a fish and chip supper. Please note there is a flight of stairs to access the room.
