HA Webinar: Ruling India: the Mughal Empire within South Asian and world histories
Event Type: CPD
Takes Place: 8th July 2026
Time: 4pm - 5pm
Venue: Zoom
Description: The Mughal Empire dominated India’s political landscape for the better part of two centuries (1526–1707). At its height, the empire included 150 million subjects and stretched across most of the Indian subcontinent, encompassing 3.2 million kilometers (including parts of modern India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan). The Mughals had a wide range of effects on Indian cultures and society that continued well into British colonialism and the post-independence period. This talk outlines key features of Mughal rule during its height, with an eye to how to engage students when teaching about the Mughals and how to connect Mughal rule with wider regional and global trends. Professor Truschke has published numerous books about the Mughals, including Aurangzeb: The Life of Legacy of India’s Most Controversial King (Stanford University Press, 2017). Her most recent book is an overview history of South Asia titled India: 5,000 Years of History on the Subcontinent (Princeton University Press, 2025). She is currently working on a biography of Akbar, the third Mughal king, that focuses on the strategies of his inner circle in building the empire.
