Paper Curiosities
Event Type: Local / Community
Takes Place: 15th May 2026
Time: 7:00pm
Venue: The Tudor Room, Apsley Mill Cottage, Stationers Place, Hemel Hempstead, HP3 9RL
Description: A talk about a number of unusual applications for paper throughout history. The versatility of paper lends itself to some surprising uses. Topics will include forgery, the music hall, computers and a flower show, and, as ever, Mike will keep his audience entertained. The Apsley Paper Trail talks programme runs through the warmer months of the year (April to October). Held on Friday evenings at 7pm, talks are delivered by a variety of specialists, mostly local historians, so they are perfect for those wishing to further their local knowledge. There is a strong paper theme, with talks about the Gade Valley paper mills, John Dickinson, printing and development of the local area. They include human stories, as well as great inventions. Tonight's speaker is Michael Stanyon. Mike is one of our regular speakers and generally referred to as the oracle for all things paper history, having set up our archive more than 20 years ago. Talks are informal and the ticket price includes a mug of tea or coffee and a fish and chip supper. The venue is the Tudor Room of the Apsley Mills Cottage. Please note there is a flight of stairs to access the room.
