Description: The Welsh landscape painter Thomas Jones (1743-1803) spent seven years in Italy, the first four in Rome where he met his Danish wife, Maria Moncke, and the last three in Naples where they raised their two daughters before returning to Britain. His extraordinarily 'modern' oil-on-paper paintings which are in many British public collections continue to attract interest from art historians, but the study of his complete household accounts from Naples reveals a more intimate story of the ties of both affection and service within a Grand Tour family. Professor Calaresu says: 'I am a cultural historian who originally trained as a historian of political thought for my PhD in Cambridge, after undergraduate and Master's degrees in Canada. My work moves between my interests in material culture and the urban environment with the history of ideas in early modern Italy. I am currently writing a cultural history of the urban experience of the Welsh landscape artist Thomas Jones in Rome and Naples in the 1780s.'
