Witches versus Werewolves: Gender and Violence in the Supernatural Mind
Halloween Lecture with Dr Jan Machielsen
Event Type: HA
Takes Place: 2nd November 2026
Time: 7.30pm
Venue: Online via Zoom
Description: Werewolf trials were considerably rarer than witch trials in early modern Europe, with executions numbering only in the low hundreds. Contemporary authors considered the werewolf a particularly sensational subspecies of witch—part of the Devil’s broader assault on humanity. Yet it is their differences that catch the eye today, starting with gender. Unlike witches, werewolves were predominantly male. A comparative approach to witches and werewolves shows us what was really at stake in these supernatural crimes. Dr Jan Machielsen teaches early modern history at Cardiff University. He is the author and editor of many works on witches, werewolves and saints. His latest book - 'The Basque Witch-Hunt: A Secret History' (2024) – won the US Prose Award for European History.
