Description: Wot?! No Shakespeare play or modern historical blockbuster? The eventful reign of Henry II, king of Jerusalem and Cyprus (1285-1324) Medieval Cyprus was a pocket kingdom – a real-life Ruritania – that lasted from the late 12th century to the late 15th. This talk looks at a dysfunctional family marred by bloodshed and quarrels over the succession, not to mention quarrels with their neighbours and their trading partners, military failures, the suppression of the Templars while the Knights of John were seizing Rhodes as their HQ, and a king who was impotent. What more could an aspiring historical novelist want? Enough here to outdo Othello and King Lear any day. Peter Edbury is a historian with no intention whatever of writing a historical novel.
