Webinar: The Bayeux Tapestry – what can it tell us about the history of 1066?
A webinar for pupils, students and teachers – join live on Zoom
Event Type: HA
Takes Place: 18th November 2026
Time: 10.00-11.00am
Description: 1066 is one of the most famous dates in British history and the Bayeux tapestry is the historic equivalent of an epic cartoon created to tell the story of the build-up, the battle, and the immediate aftermath. Every schoolchild in England is told about the date and with the tapestry making a rare and historic visit to London the relationship between Harold Godwinson and William of Normandy (aka the Conqueror) are also in the spotlight. Sadly, not everyone is going to get to see the actual tapestry. However, to ensure that the current generation do at least get to learn about the Bayeux Tapestry and find out its secrets we have arranged for Dr Emily Winkler to present a webinar all about it. Dr Winkler is the author of The Pocket Guide to the Bayeux Tapestry, published this year specifically for the exhibition. In addition to leading us through the tapestry and what it means she will be able to answer questions and reveal some of the ways that the sewn imagery has influenced our understanding of the historic events. Teachers are invited to join as a class, or in small groups if they want their pupils or students to ask questions. The recording will also be available for members after the live event.
