Description: The English Civil War of 1642-46 was one of the most catastrophic events in Exeter’s history. This talk will show how the inhabitants of Exeter first began to quarrel with each other over religious issues, then became divided into two warring camps, and finally - after three years of bitter conflict – witnessed much of the ancient city being torn down about their ears. The lecture will also consider the long-term impact of the war, and some of the ways in which its traces may still be glimpsed in Exeter today.
