HA Webinar: A revolution denied? Gender, sexuality and feminism in modern Britain, 1945-the present

Event Type: CPD

Takes Place: 24th February 2026

Time: 4pm-5pm

Venue: Zoom

Description: Since the end of the Second World War, there has been much talk of 'revolutions' in gender relationships and sexual behaviour. Many observers have pointed to significant increases in women's participation in politics and paid employment, of new sexual identities and the emergence of a more sexually expressive culture, and of radical shifts in the understanding of gender roles in the home. Other commentators have been more cautious, highlighting the resilience of traditional assumptions, the persistence of inequalities in the public sphere, and the ongoing sexualisation of the female body. How should we interpret changes in gender and sexuality? What caused them? Which developments were most significant? Did they amount to a revolution? This talk will explore these questions by drawing on recent research in the field and discussing some key examples from across the period.
