Writing History Articles: A Workshop for PhD students and ECRs

By Henry Miller, published 10th July 2025

On Friday 19 September, the editorial team of History: The Journal of the Historical Association – one of the longest-running generalist historical journals in the English language – is organising a workshop to support PhD students and early-career researchers yet to publish their first article.

Held at the Historical Association (HA) in London, the event will feature interactive sessions led by members of History’s editorial team, focused on writing articles for academic journals. The workshop will offer practical guidance and allow participants to discuss their own ideas for a future article. Following on from this event, they will be able to access mentoring, with a view to a potential submission to History.

This is an in-person event. A limited amount of travel support will be available to facilitate attendance for those without access to financial support from their institutions.

To apply for a place at this workshop, please send an email to historyeditors@northumbria.ac.uk by 20 August 2025, providing us with the following information:

  • A brief indication (c. 300 words) of the article you intend to write.
  • A one-page CV.
  • An indication of whether you might need travel support, and where you would travel from.
