Commemorating the First World War

Over the next three editions of Primary History our assemblies pages will be linked to the theme of commemorating the First World War. We have found that while many teachers wish to remember these events in school, they are unsure how to approach the subject with primary aged children. It is clearly inappropriate to expose young children to the full horror of such a conflict, yet at a time when so much focus is given to this war and others it is important to take the opportunity to develop children's understanding of right and wrong and begin to promote feelings of respect and tolerance. Here we suggest a number of ways into the topic mainly through the lives of individuals or groups and we would recommend looking at local links wherever possible. We have also included links to some organisations and websites to support your planning...
