Webinar series: Teaching history to mixed age classes in primary

HA webinar series for primary teachers and history subject leaders

Published: 2nd July 2026

What does this series cover?

This webinar series will explore effective approaches to planning and teaching history across mixed-age classes. We will discuss how children at different ages and key stages engage with key historical concepts and share practical strategies to support inclusive learning and adaptive teaching. Drawing on successful school case-studies, we will also provide examples of how to create a coherent, progressive multi-cycle history curriculum.

In addition, we will consider options for sequencing history teaching for a mixed-age class. Year A and Year B will mean that some pupils learn the content in the sequence of A and then B, while the other cohort learn B and then A. How do teachers make this work for optimal benefit to pupils’ history learning? How can sequencing be adapted for mixed-age class? We will draw upon examples from schools across the country.

  • What is the focus of each webinar?

The series consists of two webinars. We recommend watching live on the dates listed below. Recordings will also be available to booked delegates until the end of the term and made available on the website in due course.
