On 6 May 2023 King Charles III, together with Camilla, the Queen Consort, will be crowned in Westminster Abbey. The Coronation provides rich opportunities for history lessons at both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. At Key Stage 1 it naturally lends itself to Key Stage 1 ‘changes within living memory’ comparing the coronation in 2023 with that of Elizabeth II in 1953. At Key Stage 2 it relates to a post-1066 thematic study and/or comparisons with King Edgar’s coronation in Anglo-Saxon times. This provides opportunities for children to consider substantive concepts such as the monarchy together with disciplinary concepts such as continuity and change, which can be explored through considering both the nature of the coronation ceremony and the role of the monarchy over time...
