This issue's problem: Roger Wendover has come to define GCSE teaching in terms of a diet of practice exam questions.

Roger is a few weeks into his second placement and his mentor, John, has been taken aback by the rigid approach that he has adopted in teaching Year 10. John was initially very impressed by Roger's organised manner - his immediate concern to find out about the exam board and particular specification followed, and the urgency with which he sought access to assessment data for the classes that he was going to be teaching. However, having discussed the plans for his first few GCSE lessons and begun to observe him teach, John is becoming concerned about Roger's limited conceptions of learning at Key Stage 4 and very aware of the constraints imposed by his vision of a ‘good' GCSE lesson...
