Innovation, inspiration and diversification: new approaches to history at Key Stage 3

Article

Good history teaching should not be the responsibility of a single department working in isolation. The history subject community as a whole should work together to ensure that history teaching is of as high a quality as possible. This does not mean that every department, and every teacher, should do exactly the same things. It means, rather, that there should be opportunities for professional discussion and debate, for trading resources and sharing ideas. Jerome Freeman and Jane Weake, of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), introduce here another means of encouraging this professional dialogue. Their Innovating with History website, http://www.qca.org.uk/history/innovating, presents guidance for history teachers and subject leaders, originated by experts in their field. But this is not their history teaching website – it is ours as history teachers. So whether your Key Stage 3 course needs completely rewriting, or you have simply had a good idea that has worked well and which you want to share, this website is certainly worth a look.
