Why did Henry visit The Vyne? A historic environment study for A-level

By Edwin Castel

Target age range: A-level

It is an often-overlooked fact that the Tudor court was rarely stationary for long. These resources focus on a single royal visit to a courtier at a specific place and time. By examining this one event in its local context, teachers and students can explore broader themes, such as the nature of the royal court, the mechanisms of royal authority and the roles of courtiers in matters of war, diplomacy and religious reform.

As well as introducing an historic environment, these resources draw on the latest scholarship and immerse A-level students in visual, cultural, architectural and written sources from the Tudor period.

This resource was produced by Edwin Castel, Head of Faculty and Teacher of History and Politics at St Bartholomew’s School, Newbury. We would particularly like to acknowledge The Vyne Estate, National Trust for their support in the development of this resource.

Every effort has been made to trace all image copyright holders and permissions in these resources, although occasionally it has not been possible to identify them. Please contact Maheema Chanrai at maheema.chanrai@history.org.uk with any queries.
