The 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt provided an excellent springboard for the Historical Association to delve into the late Middle Ages. In 2016 we were able to run four projects for teachers and pupils from Key Stage 2 through to A Level through funding provided by Agincourt 600, each exploring a different aspect of how we remember and think about late medieval history.

Do they learn about Agincourt in France?

Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3, transition

This project involved a trip to France and required cross-curricular learning combining History and French. It aimed to help young people examine how where we live affects the history we learn. Teachers can make use of an open-access Key Stage Two enquiry, Remembering Agincourt, here.

This competition was designed for students to explore how museum exhibitions affect our ideas of significance, by organising and curating their own pop-up exhibition based on Agincourt. Teachers can make use of an open-access Key Stage Three enquiry, Interpreting Agincourt, here.

The Agincourt Tournament

GCSE, A Level

This one-day head-to-head public speaking battle for 15 to 19 year olds was modelled after the Great Debate. It centred around the question ‘Agincourt, Waterloo, the Somme: why do some battles resonate through history?’

An immersive and rigorous professional development course on the late Middle Ages, led by Ian Dawson and focusing on subject knowledge. Teachers explored the most recent scholarship, evidence and sources for studying the period and how these can be used in the classroom.
