Professor Barry Coward

Published: 21st March 2011

We are very sad to announce the death of Barry Coward, Emeritus Professor of History at Birkbeck, President of the Historical Association from 2005 to 2008 and a long term supporter of the HA nationally and locally with the Central London Branch. Barry was a greatly respected academic and The Stuart Age is the classic textbook for the period.

Barry became President of the HA at a very difficult time; the centenary celebrations were looming, Madeline Stiles had just been diagnosed with secondary ovarian cancer, the financial future looked fairly bleak. By the end of his presidency in 2008 Barry had overseen some fundamental change which has enabled the HA to grow in its activities. Barry was incredibly supportive and hardworking. He gave huge amounts of his time to the HA and to supporting history teaching. He was very much liked by all the staff here at 59a and will be much missed. More than anything Barry was a truly kind and thoughtful person. Our thoughts and sympathy are with his wife Shirley and their family.
