The French Revolution teaching resources

Published: 27th September 2012

Free teaching resources to support the teaching of AS/ A2 and IB History modules on the French Revolution and more generally the teaching of the interpretation of primary historical sources.

The exercises have been designed by a senior A-level and IB examiner in conjunction with Dr Katherine Astbury of the University of Warwick to highlight aspects of the French Revolution covered by all the exam boards. They include contextual material and suggested answers, making them a fully contained set of activities. The material can be downloaded here...

The visual material has been drawn from an extraordinary collection of Revolutionary prints held at Waddesdon Manor, transcribed, translated and catalogued as part of an AHRC-funded collaboration between Waddesdon Manor and the University of Warwick. These prints are freely available online as part of the Waddesdon Manor online collection catalogue.

Dr Astbury, author of Narrative Responses to the Trauma of the French Revolution (2012), said 'the prints of the Revolutionary decade make a wonderful source of visual material to help students conceptualise the Revolution in new ways. They range from the sombre to the satirical and add a great new dimension to teaching the period. More exercises will be available soon and we're keen to have feedback so please let us know how you have used these resources and how your pupils have responded to them. All those who provide feedback will be entered into a monthly draw for £20 of Amazon tokens. There will be prize draws for teachers and pupils so please encourage your classes to explore the further resources on the website and leave their own feedback at:
