By Emeritus Professor Archie Brown, published 19th January 2024

Changing interpretations

Mikhail Gorbachev’s leadership and period in office is remembered differently in different parts of the world. Professor Archie Brown discusses the different interpretations the have developed in the West and in Russia to Gorbachev and his legacy. He describes the impact and development of Post-Soviet Russia and how this has influenced perceptions of Gorbachev in Russia and abroad, but also how Gorbachev himself viewed the development of Russia in the 21st century before his death aged 91 in 2022.

This film is part of our film series that looks at Russian history through the lens of leadership from Alexander II to Yeltsin. New films will be published throughout 2024.
