  • Who is the course for?

This course is designed for senior leaders in secondary schools who manage history departments but are not history specialists.

  • How is the course structured?

The course is entirely on-demand. It blends theory-based and practical CPD through a series of 5 short films (total running time approx. 100 minutes) which are available to watch any time at your convenience.

The course leaders welcome questions from participants via email at events@history.org.uk or through social media (details available via the films).

  • What are the learning outcomes?

This course will enable you to:

    • • Gain a working knowledge of effective curriculum design and teaching in secondary history
    • • Build a meaningful understanding of assessment and progression in history
    • • Explore strategies to conduct subject evaluation through a subject-sensitive lens
    • • Learn how to support history subject leaders to implement a rigorous curriculum.
  • What do participants say about this course?

“It has introduced a bit of a framework that I think can be adapted and applied to other departments I line manage to enable much deeper and more productive conversations to take place.”

“The videos were clear and easy to understand, particularly for a non-specialist.”

“It has opened my eyes and allowed me to think more carefully about lots of different elements when line managing this subject.”

“The session about assessment has really got me thinking about how we can assess students at my school reliably and accurately without making too much workload for staff.”

“Really helpful guidance in terms of how to think about curriculum design, dos/don'ts which will help me in my conversations with the HOD. Our HOD is brand new and there is a lot of review work to be done so this is invaluable for me at this particular point. In the longer term, this also gives a framework for evaluating and reviewing impact.”

“I have really enjoyed the experience and feel it will enrich my relationship with my Head of Humanities. It has also given him more confidence in me as I hope I have demonstrated my commitment to supporting him as a history lead.”
