What do we mean by creativity?

In the last few years there has been an emphasis on the ‘creative curriculum', ‘creativity' and ‘creative teaching and learning', but there has not always been a shared understanding of what this means. This article uses the definition from ‘Creativity - find it, promote it' (2005) which is based on the definition from All our Futures: Creativity and Education (DfEE 1999).

Creativity always involves thinking or behaving imaginatively. Second, overall this imaginative activity is purposeful: that is, it is directed to achieving an objective. Third, these processes must generate something original. Fourth, the outcome must be of value in relation to the objective.

Ofsted (2010) found in their survey, Learning: Creative approaches that raise standards that this definition was the most frequently quoted by..."
