Target age range: Key Stage 2 

This is a six-week study of a local main road that is very close to the author’s school. It includes several sources, such as maps, trade directories, photographs, built environment, a local walk and newspaper clippings. The enquiry is arranged into six sub-enquiry questions. The aim of the enquiry is for the children to develop an understanding of the significance of the history of their immediate local area. The enquiry is aimed at Year 4 children but could work equally well in any year group in Key Stage 2. It covers the National Curriculum objective of a local history study with a focus on the significance of the local area and the change and continuity within it.
